Motivation is a tricky beast to tame. It’s what we all need to be able to plough on when the going gets tough and yet it can be hard to find. When your body aches or you reach a stage when you are working hard without getting results – be that in terms of weight, shape or athletic performance – it’s easy to get down. Even top athletes suffer from such motivational lulls but you have to find a way of overcoming them and coming out stronger on the other side.
That’s where motivational posters can be worth their weight in gold. A strong combination of words and imagery can send a powerful message and catch your eye just when you need it the most. Here are some that we think would be good to use to keep your efforts on track:
Float like a butterfly with Ali
Boxing legend Ali was almost as quick with his tongue as he was his fists or feet – providing some memorable words that can spur you on with your efforts. Our favourite (number 7 in the list) helps to show you that anyone and everyone who works out suffers in the short term, but reach their goal in the end. As Ali puts it: “I hated every minute training but I said ‘don’t quit, suffer now and live the rest of your life as a champion’.” Clearly not everyone is destined for Hall of Fame-level success, but the sentiment stands. Power through your hard work and you’ll achieve something to be proud of. The pain will fade; the pride will last.
With Arnie, you’ll be back for more
Not everyone has the way with words of Ali, yet sometimes less is more. There’s a famous poster of Arnold Schwarzenegger that demonstrates this perfectly. It shows the Terminator-turned-politician at his physical peak, arms stretched wide, accompanied by the simple word ‘conquer’. It’s a powerful image and has inspired many athletes as a result. We quite like this artistic version that would look cool on your home gym wall.
A way with words
You can find inspiration in the words of all sorts of wise people, they don’t have to be sports stars or athletes in their own right. Wherever you find wisdom that strikes a chord – from businessmen and women, politicians, authors – use it to your advantage. We quite like this one from US media mogul Ted Turner: “You can never quit. Winners never quit, and quitters never win.”
Take me to the beach
Sometimes you need no words. A simple image can, if chosen correctly, give you all the motivation you need. Many people like to work hard to get their body ‘beach ready’, so why not have this image in front of you to push you past any troubles you might have? You can choose one of the images above or, better still, why not get a picture of your next holiday destination?
Showing you the way forward
As Pop Sugar demonstrates (with photo two in this gallery), you can get motivation from an instructional poster too. A simple demonstration of some of the key parts of your workout can help to spur you on, serving as a reminder and aide all in one.
